About This Audiobook

Winterset isn’t just another haunted-house story—it’s a slow-burn excavation of fear, desire, and survival. Katherine Lockwood flees to the decaying Winterset Grange, where she stumbles into the mansion’s hidden priest holes, a warren of claustrophobic corridors where the past refuses to stay buried. Odekirk’s prose is lush but never sentimental, painting a world where every creaking floorboard feels like a betrayal. The romance unfolds like a bruise: tender at first, then tendered raw by secrets too heavy to name. This isn’t a tale of ghosts, but of the living who are haunted by what they’ve done—and what they’ve lost.

The audiobook’s magic lies in its dual narration. Helen Day’s Katherine is a wounded sparrow, her voice a tremolo of exhaustion and defiance, while Thomas Judd’s brooding aristocrat, Lord Vane, carries the weight of a man who’s spent a lifetime guarding his heart behind ivory towers and sharper tongues. Their chemistry crackles in the silences between words, making the moments of connection feel stolen from the dark itself. The production leans into the house’s decay, with muffled echoes and distant footsteps that make the listening experience feel like eavesdropping on a secret history.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I approached Winterset expecting another derivative gothic thriller, but Odekirk’s writing surprised me with its restraint and emotional precision. Katherine isn’t a damsel shrinking from terror—she’s a woman who’s learned to hide in plain sight, and Day’s narration sells that quiet resilience perfectly. The priest holes, those forgotten warrens of brick and shadow, become a character in their own right, and the audiobook’s sound design amplifies their menace without resorting to cheap scares. Judd’s Lord Vane is a delicious contradiction: aristocratic cruelty tempered by a vulnerability that makes his moments with Katherine feel like a lifeline in a drowning world. That said, the pacing lags in the middle act, where the romance meanders like a traveler lost in a fog-choked moor. And while Day’s performance is stellar, some of the side characters blur into indistinct murmurs, making their fates feel inconsequential. Still, the payoff justifies the detour. The final confrontation in the priest holes is a masterclass in tension, with Day’s voice trembling like a held breath. By the last chapter, I was dog-earing the audiobook equivalent—replaying passages just to savor the ache of the ending. A gothic romance for readers who prefer their love stories bitter and their silences screaming.
