Roth gives Brit a crisp, tightly wound cadence that slowly softens—her voice cracks just slightly during a voicemail she can’t send, and it wrecked me. Hayes brings a lazy warmth to Alex, but never lets his charm mask insecurity. Their dual narration isn’t just functional; it’s essential—each chapter shift feels like stepping into the other’s emotional world. The chemistry builds slowly, which I appreciated, but the audiobook stumbles slightly in the third act—there’s a rushed confrontation in a highway diner that needed more breathing room. Still, the production shines: subtle soundscapes (dripping taps, distant train whistles) deepen immersion without overdoing it. Mae’s prose is witty but never glib, and the way she ties Brit’s abandoned childhood wish list to present-day choices adds emotional weight most genre entries miss. Not all the side characters land—Brit’s sister feels undercooked—but overall, this is audiobook storytelling at its most intimate and rewarding.
