I started *ZC Four* skeptical—by book four of a series, fatigue often sets in—but Harris proves he’s still playing a different game entirely. Rory Barnett’s narration is the secret weapon here; his delivery of a deranged scientist’s monologue had me laughing out loud, while the same voice could send a chill down my spine seconds later with a single inflection. The story’s strength lies in its refusal to coddle the listener. We’re dropped into a collapsing microcosm where the castle itself is a character, its corridors rearranging to trap survivors. That said, the ending feels abrupt, as if the audiobook version cut off mid-scene to meet a runtime quota. The production is top-tier, with no distracting pops or muffled effects, but the abruptness left me wanting more—though maybe that’s the point in a story about an inescapable prison. If you crave horror that’s as clever as it is cruel, this delivers.
