About This Audiobook

Tamsin Ley’s *Zhiruto* is a rare beast: a sci-fi romance that skips the saccharine setup and dives straight into the prickly, electric tension between a human aid worker and an alien who *should* be off-limits. This isn’t your typical ‘abducted by a hunky extraterrestrial’ trope—Lora Griffin is a sharp, skeptical charity agent who stumbles into an intergalactic auction on a whim, only to find herself bartering with a species that views human emotions as either a liability or a curiosity. The worldbuilding is lean but *felt*—no sprawling lore dumps, just enough texture to make the cultural clashes sting.

Stephen Borne’s narration is a masterclass in dry wit and simmering chemistry. He nails Lora’s sarcastic inner monologue (think *The Martian*’s Mark Watney, but with better hair and worse luck) and gives Zhiruto’s alien cadence a hypnotic, almost musical rhythm that somehow makes his bluntness *sexy*. At under four hours, this is a tight, dialogue-driven listen where every scene either crackles with banter or smolders with unresolved tension. Perfect for fans of enemies-to-lovers who’ve grown tired of the genre’s usual pacing bloat.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at the ‘human woman + alien auction’ premise—until the first chapter, where Lora’s opening rant about ‘interstellar neocolonialism disguised as philanthropy’ had me laughing out loud. Ley’s writing is *sharp*, and Borne’s delivery sells it; he turns what could’ve been a one-note ‘sassy heroine’ into a fully realized woman whose cynicism feels earned, not performative. The romance unfolds like a slow-burn fuse, with Zhiruto’s baffled fascination with human stubbornness (and Lora’s equally baffled attraction to his *lack* of small talk) creating some of the best verbal sparring I’ve heard in the genre. That said, the brevity is a double-edged sword. The middle act rushes through a few emotional beats—Lora’s backstory about the shelter she’s funding gets short shrift, and a secondary character’s betrayal feels undercooked. And while Borne’s alien voices are distinct, his female side characters occasionally blur together. But the production is crisp, the chemistry is *electric*, and the ending? Worth every minute of the buildup. If you’ve ever wished for a romance where the ‘miscommunication’ trope was replaced with actual, you know, *communication*—but with teeth—this is your audiobook. Just don’t expect to fold laundry while listening; you’ll be too busy grinning.
