The narration (by an unnamed interviewer) is refreshingly unobtrusive: no dramatic inflections, no forced gravitas, just a steady hand guiding Morrell through topics that clearly still gnaw at him. His voice—raspy, deliberate, with the occasional chuckle—sells the self-awareness. When he calls *First Blood*’s adaptation a ‘betrayal of the novel’s anti-war themes,’ you believe him, because he’s not performing outrage; he’s stating a fact, like a mechanic pointing out a faulty engine part. The pacing is where this shines. At 101 minutes, it’s tight enough to avoid meandering but spacious enough to let Morrell’s tangents breathe. His breakdown of how *First Blood*’s original ending (spoiler: Rambo *dies*) was scrapped for a sequel-friendly twist is alone worth the listen. That said, the production isn’t flawless: there’s a faint echo in the recording, as if it was captured in a too-empty room, and the interviewer occasionally cuts Morrell off mid-thought, eager to pivot to the next question. My bigger critique? For all its candor, the conversation skirts Morrell’s later work almost entirely—*The Brotherhood of the Rose*, *The Fifth Profession*—which feels like a missed chance to explore how he evolved (or didn’t) after Rambo’s shadow. Still, as a warts-and-all snapshot of an author reckoning with his own cultural footprint, it’s gripping. Just don’t expect cozy nostalgia.
