Emily Mount’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook, transforming what could’ve been a standard cozy mystery into something far more immersive. She nails the wry, exhausted humor of Mara, the bookshop owner grappling with her own complicity in the crime, while also delivering the clipped, nervous energy of Simon as he stumbles into detective work. Mount’s voice work for the town’s eccentric writers is particularly delightful—each character sounds distinct enough to distinguish them mid-monologue, which is no small feat given the novel’s dense cast. That said, the production occasionally stumbles. The recording quality dips slightly during some outdoor scenes, and a few of the louder sound effects (like doors slamming) feel unnaturally jarring against the otherwise polished delivery. Still, these are minor quibbles.
