Rules of Prey

I’ve listened to my share of police procedurals, but *Rules of Prey* stands out because it refuses to romanticize either the cop or the killer. Lucas Davenport is a fascinating protagonist—not because he’s a flawless hero, but because he’s a *realistic* one. He’s brilliant, but his gambling addiction and moral flexibility make him feel dangerously human. Ferrone’s performance sells this perfectly; he gives Davenport a world-weary rasp that suggests a man who’s seen too much, but his delivery never tips into caricature. The real star, though, is the maddog. Sandford writes him with such clinical precision that when Ferrone shifts into his voice—a smooth, almost *pleased* monotone—it’s like listening to a surgeon describe a dissection. It’s unsettling in the best way. That said, this isn’t a flawless listen. The mid-section sags slightly under the weight of procedural detail—there’s a lot of door-knocking and report-reading that, while realistic, tests the pacing. And while the female characters are well-drawn, they sometimes feel like satellites in Davenport’s orbit rather than fully fleshed-out players. But these are quibbles. The final act is a white-knuckle sprint, and the audio production is crisp, with no distracting edits or volume spikes. If you love thrillers that prioritize psychology over splatter, and narration that *becomes* the characters, this is a must-listen. Just don’t start it before bed—trust me on that.
