Instead, Shirtaloon pulled the rug out. The first half of this audiobook is *slow*—deliberately so—as Jason grapples with the fallout of his actions in a way that feels uncomfortably real. There’s a 30-minute stretch where he’s just *talking* to allies (and enemies) about the cost of his ambitions, and Miller’s narration makes it gripping. His voice for Jason has evolved from a snarky underdog to someone carrying the weight of a world, and the way he underplays key revelations—like the twist about the [REDACTED] faction—makes them land harder. That said, the pacing *does* stumble in the middle. The political maneuvering, while necessary, drags in ways the monster-fighting never did. And as much as I love Miller’s performance, his female voices still occasionally veer into caricature (though his take on [REDACTED]’s icy detachment is *chef’s kiss*). But when the action finally hits—especially the climactic battle against the [REDACTED]—it’s worth the wait. The sound design here is subtle but effective: a low hum for mana surges, the *thwip* of arrows that somehow feels visceral. This isn’t just another litRPG audiobook; it’s a story about what happens when the game stops being fun, and the people playing it start breaking. If you’re here for power fantasies, you’ll get them—but you’ll also get a hero who’s starting to wonder if he’s the villain.
