The production is clean—no distracting artifacts or bizarre EQ choices—though I did wish the battle soundscapes had been layered a touch more immersively when Phillips describes the 1808 Dos de Mayo uprising. Mid-audio, the tempo dips into a 30-minute slog on Bourbon bureaucracy that felt like listening to a notary drone about tax receipts. Still, when Phillips pivots to the Civil War, Soto’s voice tightens almost imperceptibly, mirroring the national trauma. It’s a history that earns its listen, especially for those who’d rather hear than decipher.
