She doesn’t over-dramatize the emotional beats, which could’ve felt cheesy, but instead lets the story’s authenticity shine through. That said, the pacing drags a bit in the middle act. There’s a stretch where the emotional tension builds slowly, almost too slowly for my taste, as we wait for Jolene and Lonnie’s connection to deepen. But when the story finally clicks—oh, does it click. The moment Jolene and Lonnie share their first real conversation in sign language is electric, and Shellabarger sells it with such sincerity that I found myself getting misty-eyed. The production quality is top-notch, with no distracting background noise, which only heightens the immersive feel. My one real critique? The subplot involving Jolene’s cousin feels underdeveloped, as if it’s only there to set up future books. It didn’t detract from the main story, but I couldn’t help wishing Brunstetter had given it more weight. Overall, this is a standout in Christian fiction, especially for listeners who love their romance slow-burned and steeped in quiet faith.
