I went into *A Cousin’s Promise* expecting a cozy Amish tale, so I was unprepared for how brutally honest it is about longing and faith. Shellabarger’s performance is a masterclass in subtle acting; her Loraine isn’t a simpering heroine but a woman raw with uncertainty, her voice cracking just enough to sell the gut-punch moments. The love triangle is refreshingly unglamorous—Wayne’s passivity isn’t romanticized, and Jake’s kindness feels earned, not saintly. That said, the middle act drags with too many kitchen-table sermons that could’ve been condensed. The production itself is clean, but the sound design leans heavily on ambient “country sounds” that occasionally feel like noise for the sake of atmosphere. My biggest criticism? The ending wraps up too neatly after such a fraught emotional journey—it’s the only moment where Brunstetter’s trademark optimism feels like a cop-out. Still, by the final chapter, I was invested enough to forgive the stumbles. This isn’t a feel-good listen; it’s a listen that lingers, asking hard questions about what we’re willing to sacrifice for love—and whether God’s timing is ever what we pray for.
