I went into *A Criminal Justice* expecting another formulaic legal thriller, but William L. Myers Jr. flipped the script on me before the opening credits finished. Mick McFarland isn’t just an innocent man accused—he’s a man caught in a system that’s already decided his guilt, and the way the story peels back the layers of that rot is downright chilling. The trial scenes are where Myers shines brightest, turning what could’ve been dry procedural moments into a chess match where every witness is a potential traitor. The twist involving David Hanson’s involvement is the kind of gut-punch revelation that makes you rewind the audiobook immediately to catch what you missed. My only real complaint? The second act drags ever so slightly as the legal maneuvering mounts, but even that feels intentional—a deliberate pressure cooker before the explosion of the third act. Will Damron is a revelation here, especially in how he modulates Mick’s voice between exhausted resignation and fiery defiance. His portrayal of the prosecuting attorney, a slick predator in a thousand-dollar suit, is so spot-on it should come with a warning label. That said, Damron’s performance isn’t flawless: a handful of side characters, particularly the women in the story, sometimes blur together in tone, and the audio production occasionally swallows a few lines in crowded courtroom scenes. But these are minor quibbles in what’s otherwise a gripping, thought-provoking listen. If you love thrillers that make you question justice as much as they entertain, this is your next obsession.
