About This Audiobook

When Montauk’s glitzy Designer Showhouse spirals into a battlefield of passive aggression and power drills, decorator Meg Barrett finds her dream project smeared with secrets—and a body. Kathleen Bridge wrangles high-end decor and low-down deceit into a tightly wound mystery where every chaise lounge hides a clue and every swatch book could be a weapon. This isn’t just a whodunit—it’s a how-did-that-get-there-dunit, complete with clashing egos, competitive florists, and a ghost-hunting crew that may or may not be onto something. The atmosphere thrums with coastal chic and creeping dread, and Meg, equal parts dry wit and dogged instinct, proves that good taste doesn’t preclude good sleuthing. Vanessa Daniels’ narration elevates the material with a sly precision that mirrors Meg’s own observational humor. She nails the brittle tones of rival designers and the offbeat cadence of paranormal enthusiasts without veering into caricature. The production is crisp, the pacing leans into suspense without dragging, and the audiobook format sharpens the dialogue-driven tension. If you crave a mystery where the suspects all use the right shade of taupe—and threaten to kill with kindness—this one delivers design-forward drama with a satisfying edge of danger.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I went in for the quirky setup—a design showhouse turned murder scene with ghost hunters lurking in the corners—and stayed for Meg Barrett, who’s fast becoming one of my favorite amateur sleuths. There’s something delicious about a mystery where the weapons are more likely to be stilettos (heels, not blades) and sabotage takes the form of swapped fabric samples. Vanessa Daniels’ performance is a standout: her Meg is wry, grounded, and just skeptical enough to keep the ghost subplot from feeling silly. She gives each designer a distinct, often hilariously pretentious voice, and the paranormal crew gets just the right amount of eccentric inflection. The story moves briskly, though I did find the middle act slightly cluttered—too many side characters vie for attention, and one subplot involving a missing sketch feels undercooked. The climax more than makes up for it, though, with a reveal that’s both surprising and earned. I appreciated that the audiobook didn’t overdo the sound effects; the tension comes from performance and writing, not gimmicks. If you like your mysteries with a side of interior design drama and a narrator who knows how to land a sarcastic pause, this is a solid pick.
