I went into *The Elite* expecting more of the same frothy royal romance I’d enjoyed in the first book, but Kiera Cass delivered a story that’s equal parts *The Bachelor* and *Les Misérables*—messy, morally gray, and impossible to pause. America Singer is a protagonist who grows teeth in this installment; her frustration with the system, her jealousy over Maxon’s wandering eyes, and her guilt over her family’s suffering make her feel achingly real. The love triangle isn’t just a trope here—it’s a pressure cooker, with Aspen’s gritty resilience challenging Maxon’s privileged charm in a way that feels earned, not manufactured. My one critique? The rebellion’s stakes sometimes feel like background noise, as if Cass assumes we’ll care about the peasants’ plight just because she mentions hunger once. Spoiler: I needed more concrete stakes to match the emotional weight of America’s personal drama. Still, the payoff—when America finally asserts her agency—is electric. Sâmia Bianchi is the audiobook’s unsung hero. Her portrayal of America’s emotional whiplash—from giddy infatuation to seething rage—is so vivid it’s like she’s performing the role live. Where some narrators might soften America’s edges to make her likable, Bianchi leans into her flaws: her petulance, her selfishness, her occasional cowardice. It’s refreshing. My only nitpick is the occasional abrupt shift in tone during action scenes; a few confrontations lack the visceral punch they deserve. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise stellar listening experience. If you loved *The Selection* but craved more bite, *The Elite* delivers—especially in audio, where Bianchi’s performance turns emotional turmoil into something you can *feel* in your bones.
