Miranda Raison’s narration is the secret weapon here—a performance so controlled it borders on chilling, but with enough micro-shifts in tone to hint at the storm beneath. She nails the way people lie to themselves even as they’re lying to each other, especially in scenes where the protagonist, Lila, tries to justify her choices while her husband’s lawyer systematically dismantles them. The pacing is relentless; Lynch doesn’t waste time on backstory, and Raison’s delivery ensures every legal maneuver feels like a gut punch. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The supporting cast occasionally slips into caricature—the morally ambiguous friend whose advice veers into soap-opera territory, or the judge who feels like a plot device rather than a person. And while the lack of resolution is intentional, it’ll frustrate listeners who want catharsis over ambiguity. Still, the way Raison sells Lila’s quiet devastation makes it worth the ride. By the final chapter, you’ll be questioning who you’re rooting for—and that’s the mark of a story that refuses to let you off easy.
