Vicki-Jo Eva’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook, elevating Penner’s snarky, world-weaving prose into something transcendent. Eva nails Jez’s grumpy, exhausted cadence perfectly—her Fennex’s exasperation feels like a physical presence, especially in moments of hilarious deadpan delivery (her take on ‘festival obligations’ is a masterclass in reluctant charisma). The contrast with Taenya, played with effortless poise and warmth, makes their dynamic crackle on every page. Eva also distinguishes between characters with subtle vocal quirks, from the clipped consonants of a suspicious human merchant to the melodic lilt of an elf councilor, without resorting to caricature. That said, the production stumbles slightly in the first hour, where background music sometimes swells to distracting levels during quieter exchanges, muddying the otherwise crisp audio. A tighter mix would’ve been ideal. Pacing is a standout strength, though—the story moves with the energy of a snowball downhill, balancing action, banter, and emotional beats so seamlessly that the 7-hour runtime flies by. The romance between Jez and Taenya develops naturally, avoiding the pitfalls of insta-love while still feeling urgent and earned. If you’re a fan of snarky protagonists, found-family tropes, or gaslamp fantasy with a festive twist, this is a hugely satisfying listen—just maybe skip the first chapter on a long commute unless you’ve got headphones that can handle the odd musical swell.
