I was drawn into this audiobook by John Hopkinson's matter-of-fact narration, which perfectly captures the tone of David E. Patterson's memoir. The story is both personal and universal, conveying the fear, camaraderie, and resilience that defined Patterson's experience as a foot soldier in WWII. The pacing is well-balanced, with a good mix of action, reflection, and quiet moments. One minor quibble is that some of the transitions between scenes feel a bit abrupt, but this is a minor flaw in an otherwise engaging narrative. My only other criticism is that the production could benefit from a bit more sound design to enhance the overall atmosphere, but Hopkinson's voice is strong enough to carry the story.
