When I pressed play on Twisted, I was immediately struck by the contrast between Mary Pilon’s own voice and Carla Correa’s. Pilon, as the author, brings an immediacy that feels like she’s recounting the story from her notebook, full of the same urgency you’d find in a breaking news report. Correa’s delivery, deeper and more resonant, rounds out the narrative, especially during the harrowing survivor interviews, where her empathy shines without slipping into melodrama. The production is crisp: courtroom audio is mixed cleanly, and the occasional low‑level hum of a gymnasium background adds atmosphere without distracting. The pacing is expertly calibrated. Early chapters race through the initial investigations, mirroring the frantic scramble of journalists chasing leads. Midway, the tempo eases as the book delves into the institutional cover‑ups, granting space for nuanced analysis. I did notice a couple of hiccups: at two points the background music rose just enough to mask subtle dialogue, forcing me to rewind; and a few abrupt chapter transitions left me momentarily disoriented. These are minor blemishes in an otherwise immersive, well‑produced work. If you crave a true‑crime memoir that balances investigative rigor with human storytelling, Twisted delivers in spades.
