About This Audiobook

Josh Lanyon’s *A Ghost of a Chance* is a deliciously eerie romance that blurs the lines between ghost story and love tale, wrapped in the kind of gothic atmosphere that lingers long after the final word. Set against the fog-choked cliffs of a decaying seaside mansion, it follows a skeptical historian who’s hired to authenticate a recently uncovered suicide letter—only to uncover something far more haunting. The plot crackles with dry wit and slow-burn tension, as the protagonist navigates not just the mystery of David Berkeley’s death, but the unsettling allure of his ghost. Lanyon’s prose is sharp, laced with period detail and modern irreverence, making this a ghost story for readers who prefer their hauntings with heart—and a side of smirk.

The audiobook’s strength lies in Kevin R. Free’s velvety narration, which balances the protagonist’s world-weariness with the ghost’s spectral charm. Free’s voice shifts effortlessly between the historian’s gruff skepticism and the ghost’s honeyed, almost seductive whispers, imbuing the story with an intimacy that’s rare in audiobooks. The pacing is brisk, yet the ghostly presence feels tangible, thanks to Free’s ability to make even the most mundane descriptions feel charged with unseen energy. It’s a performance that elevates the material, turning what could’ve been a straightforward supernatural romance into something unsettlingly immersive.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *A Ghost of a Chance* expecting a light supernatural fling—you know, the kind of tale where a hot ghost seduces a mortal into solving his tragic past. What I got was something far more interesting: a romance that’s as much about obsession as it is about love, with a ghost who’s equal parts tragic and infuriating. Free’s narration is the secret sauce here; his delivery of the protagonist’s dry, sarcastic inner monologue crackles, while his portrayal of the ghost—all smoldering regret and creeping desire—is downright hypnotic. The chemistry between the two is palpable, even (or especially) when it’s one-sided. That said, the story’s resolution felt a little too neat for my tastes. The historian’s shift from skeptic to believer happens at warp speed, and the ghost’s motivations, while tragic, border on melodramatic by the end. Still, Free’s performance makes up for a lot, and the atmospheric setting—all crashing waves and salt-stained windows—is a character in its own right. If you’re a fan of gay romances with a side of gothic dread and a narrator who sells every whisper, this is a must-listen. Just temper your expectations; this ghost isn’t going to haunt your dreams, but he’ll definitely haunt your playlist.
