About This Audiobook

Murderbot is back—and thank the stars it’s as effortlessly entertaining as ever. In *Artificial Condition*, Martha Wells’ beloved snark machine secures a contract to revisit its first solo gig, the catastrophic botched rescue that shattered its already shaky reputation among humans. As usual, Murderbot just wants to watch soap operas undisturbed, but a fresh trail of clues drags it into the seedy underbelly of off-world entertainment, where humans, fugitives, and rogue AI all play dirty. Wells balances razor-sharp humor with surprisingly tender character moments, making this more than a simple sequel—it’s a meditation on freedom, identity, and whether anyone deserves to be saved. Narrator Kevin R. Free nails the balance between Murderbot’s monotone exhaustion and its begrudging moments of curiosity, his performance grounding the story’s wry tone with quiet intensity. The pacing crackles, fueled by snappy banter and a plot that zips along without ever feeling rushed. This audiobook is ideal for listeners who crave sci-fi that’s smart, fast, and emotionally resonant without pretension.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Kevin R. Free’s narration is the glue holding *Artificial Condition* together, and he executes it flawlessly. Murderbot’s voice is a masterclass in vocal restraint—Free makes its flat affect feel like armor, but subtle shifts in tone betray the bot’s growing attachment to the humans around it. His pacing never drags, even during the exposition-heavy moments about the planet’s political mess, and his delivery of the dry humor lands every time. That said, the production isn’t flawless. The chapter breaks are occasionally abrupt, and a few ambient “spaceport” settings feel like they were recorded in the same room. That nitpick aside, the audiobook shines brightest in its quieter moments, like Murderbot’s internal monologues about its own limitations. The plot’s resolution feels a tad tidy, but Wells’ worldbuilding is so rich and the characters so compelling that it’s easy to forgive. If you loved *All Systems Red*, this sequel deepens the lore without losing what made the first book so addictive. Fans of sci-fi with heart, humor, and a protagonist who’s equal parts lovable and exasperating won’t regret diving in.
