About This Audiobook

Witch King delivers a fantasy narrative that refuses to follow predictable arcs, centering on a warrior prince resurrected after centuries, only to find his kingdom gone and his enemies wearing familiar faces. Martha Wells builds a layered world where gods, magic, and political machinations are intricately tied to bodily autonomy and identity. What sets this apart is its protagonist, Kai, who lives with multiple bodies and fractured memories—an inventive twist that becomes both a supernatural burden and a narrative engine, driving much of the story’s emotional and physical tension. This isn't your typical chosen-one epic; it’s a slow-burn mystery wrapped in political intrigue, where survival means constantly renegotiating who you are. Eric Mok’s narration adds depth without overshadowing the text. His voice for Kai strikes a delicate balance—youthful in tone but weathered by experience, capturing the character’s internal dissonance with quiet precision. Mok doesn’t rely on vocal acrobatics; instead, he uses subtle shifts in cadence and restraint to mirror Kai’s cautious re-engagement with a changed world. The production is clean, with well-paced delivery that lets the complexity of the world breathe. For listeners who appreciate fantasy that challenges genre conventions and values emotional intelligence over sword swings, Witch King offers a rare blend of originality and authenticity.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I went into Witch King expecting another grimdark resurrection tale, but what I got was something far more thoughtful—a fantasy that uses its supernatural elements to explore identity, loyalty, and the cost of survival. Eric Mok’s performance really elevated my experience. He doesn’t go for dramatic flourishes, which could’ve ruined the story’s more introspective moments. Instead, his Kai feels grounded—tired but not broken, cautious but not cynical. I especially appreciated how Mok handled the transitions between Kai’s bodies; slight vocal shifts without overdoing it kept the concept clear without turning it into a gimmick. The world-building is dense, and I’ll admit, it took me about an hour to fully orient myself. The opening throws you into political factions and magical systems with minimal hand-holding, which is both a strength and a mild drawback. There were moments in the middle third where the pacing lagged—too many council meetings, not enough action—but the final act more than made up for it with tight reveals and emotional payoff. My only real critique is that some side characters felt underdeveloped, especially the allies. Still, as an audiobook, this stands out for its intelligent prose, mature themes, and narration that respects the material without fading into the background.
