A Liaden Universe Constellation: Volume 4

I approached this volume as a Liaden fan, but even I was surprised by how fresh and vital these stories feel. Kevin Collins’ narration is the secret weapon here—he doesn’t just read the text; he inhabits it. His portrayal of the Liadens’ clipped, formal dialogue is particularly masterful, making the cultural quirks feel less like exposition and more like second nature. My favorite piece, the linked duo *Block Party* and *Degrees of Separation*, is a masterclass in using side characters to deepen the world. The stakes in these stories are intimate but meaningful, a refreshing contrast to the galaxy-spanning epics we often see in sci-fi. That said, a couple of the shorter pieces (*The Price of a Stamp* comes to mind) felt a tad underdeveloped, like they needed an extra scene or two to land fully. The production quality is top-tier, with crisp audio and no distracting tics, though I did occasionally wish for a brief pause between stories to mentally reset. Still, these are minor quibbles in a volume that delivers exactly what Liaden fans crave: sharp writing, vivid characters, and a universe that feels both vast and deeply personal.
