I’ll admit, I went into *A Man from Planet Earth* expecting something closer to *The Three-Body Problem*’s existential dread or *The Expanse*’s political intrigue. What I got instead was a story that’s more *Office Space* in space—if *Office Space* were written by a rocket scientist. Genta’s background shines in the painstakingly detailed depictions of alien societies, each with their own evolutionary quirks and social hierarchies. The plot unfolds like a slow-burn procedural, where the “action” is often a debate over translation protocols or a debate about whether Earth even *deserves* contact. It’s fascinating, but the pacing drags in the middle, especially during the book’s many info-dumps about alien biology or interstellar governance. The narration, however, elevates the material. Eddie Lopez’s performance as the human protagonist, a scientist caught in the crossfire of galactic politics, feels authentically exasperated—like a man who’s just realized he’s the only one in the room without a PhD in xenodiplomacy. Steven Crossley’s alien voices are where the audiobook truly excels, particularly his delivery of the *Kra*, a species whose dialogue reads like corporate legalese. The production quality is crisp, though I did notice a few inconsistent volume levels between narrators in the early chapters. My biggest critique? The ending feels abrupt, as if Genta ran out of steam after spending so much time setting up the chessboard. Still, for fans of cerebral sci-fi that trades explosions for existential paperwork, this is a rare treat—just bring your patience and a notepad for all the made-up alien titles.
