A Marsh Island

Flo Gibson’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon. Her voice carries the kind of understated authority that suits Jewett’s prose, weaving a spell of quiet fascination. She doesn’t force drama; instead, she lets the story breathe, her pacing deliberate enough to savor the salt in the air and sharp enough to keep you anchored. The young painter’s inner turmoil comes through in her subtle shifts in tone, particularly in his exchanges with the island’s residents. Gibson excels at conveying the tension between isolation and connection, making even mundane interactions feel charged with unspoken meaning. The production quality is clean but unobtrusive, allowing Jewett’s vivid descriptions to shine without sonic clutter. If I have one quibble, it’s that some of the side characters blur together—especially the women, whose personalities occasionally feel interchangeable. And while the romance’s slow burn is its strength, it also means the emotional payoff leans more toward contemplation than catharsis. Still, this is a rare audiobook where the narrator and material are in perfect harmony. I closed my eyes and felt the cold spray on my face.
