About This Audiobook

S. A. Ison’s *A Revolutionary Time* isn’t your average time-travel yarn—it’s a sharp, unsettling blend of historical fiction and psychological suspense where the past isn’t just a setting, it’s a trap. Elodie, a modern woman with a distant ancestor’s name, stumbles into 1779 with the weight of her identity pressing down on her like a grave marker. The premise sounds simple, but Ison executes it with deliberate precision: this isn’t a story about fixing history or grand heroics; it’s about surviving it. The graveyard that yanks her into the past is eerily specific, and the Revolutionary War isn’t a backdrop—it’s a labyrinth of danger where every choice feels like a gamble against fate. Kearney’s narration is the secret weapon here, delivering Elodie’s disorientation with a grounded, conversational tone that makes the absurd feel starkly real. His pacing never rushes the tension, and his subtle shifts in accent for secondary characters (especially the Revolutionary soldiers) add texture without overdoing it. This isn’t a book that panders to escapism; it’s a mirror held up to how much we’re willing to sacrifice for a name that might not even be ours.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I started listening with the mild skepticism of someone who’s heard one too many time-travel tropes, but by the halfway mark, I was fully invested—not because of the premise, but because Ison refuses to let Elodie off easy. Kearney’s narration is a masterclass in restraint; he doesn’t ham up the drama but instead leans into Elodie’s quiet panic, the kind that makes her second-guess every instinct. His voicing of the Revolutionary-era characters is especially strong—each soldier has a distinct cadence that grounds the story in its time without veering into caricature. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The production occasionally swallows some of Kearney’s quieter lines, particularly in scenes with dense dialogue, and I wished the Reverend’s backstory had been fleshed out a touch more to justify his hold over Elodie’s fate. But these are minor gripes in what is otherwise a tightly crafted listen. The real triumph here is how Ison resists the urge to tidy up history’s rough edges—Elodie’s struggles are messy, her victories fleeting, and the ending lands with a punch that lingers. If you’re craving a time-travel story that treats its genre with weight and consequence, this one delivers.
