Frozen in Time

The squad’s discovery of a *time-dilated* cave system (yes, you read that right) is where the book shifts from *Lone Survivor* to *Annihilation*, and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, the blend of military precision and cosmic horror is fresh; on the other, the abrupt tonal whiplash might frustrate listeners craving pure adrenaline. Floyd’s performance is the glue holding it together. His voice for the protagonist, Sergeant Cole, is weary but never whiny, and he nails the dry humor that keeps the squad’s dialogue from feeling like a tech manual. My only gripe? The female characters occasionally slip into a slightly higher pitch that feels forced—less like distinct voices, more like Floyd straining. The production, though, is flawless: the audio mix balances narration and effects so well that I found myself checking my headphones for drafts during the blizzard scenes. Pacing drags slightly in the middle during exposition-heavy survival sequences, but the payoff—a finale that’s equal parts tragic and ambiguous—makes it worth the slog.
