Janna Fox’s narration is the reason to experience this audiobook. She nails every inflection, from Arabella’s icy aristocratic drawl to the barely concealed exasperation in her interactions with the rake who (unbeknownst to him) holds the key to her redemption. The moment where Arabella’s carefully constructed facade cracks mid-conversation, and Fox’s voice hitches just slightly, is a masterclass in vocal acting. That said, the pacing occasionally stumbles in the middle third, where the plot’s momentum dips into repetitive scenes of social maneuvering. It’s a minor quibble in an otherwise polished performance, but it’s noticeable enough to pull a listener out of the story. As for the book itself, Heileman’s debut is a love letter to women who’ve ever felt trapped by their own reputations. Arabella’s arc isn’t about finding a man to rescue her—it’s about dismantling the system that told her she needed rescuing in the first place. The romance, when it arrives, feels earned rather than contrived, and the supporting cast, including a delightfully snarky grandmother, adds layers without overshadowing the protagonist. The only real misstep is a rushed resolution that ties up threads a bit too neatly. Still, the sharp dialogue and feminist undercurrents make this a standout in a genre too often bogged down by clichés. If you’re tired of heroines who wait for their happiness to be handed to them, Arabella’s story will feel like a triumph.
