Stockerl’s narration alone sold me on giving *Advent im Grand Hotel* a chance. His portrayal of the concierge, a man who sounds like he’s been reciting apologies for a century, is so precise I half-expected him to hand me a dry-cleaning ticket. The story’s premise—two lovers revisiting a scene of their first adventure, only to stumble into another—could have been clichéd, but Maly sidesteps melodrama with a sharp eye for human foibles. The real standout is how the hotel itself becomes a character: its labyrinthine corridors and drafty ballrooms echo with the ghosts of former guests, their scandals leaking through the wallpaper like damp. That said, the mystery’s solution lands with a thud that feels a bit too neat for my tastes. After the meticulous buildup, the final reveal relies on one too many coincidences, as if Maly herself got tangled in the hotel’s overstuffed furniture. And while Stockerl’s narration is mostly divine, I could’ve done without his occasional hammy growls during romantic tête-à-têtes—save it for the villain’s monologue, please. Still, these are minor quibbles. By the time the first snowfall blankets the final act, I was too invested in Ernestine’s dilemma to care. If you’re craving a mystery that smells of pine needles and old money, this audiobook delivers like a bellhop carrying a silver tray of clues.
