The scene where Alex’s neighbor casually mentions her diabetic son’s insulin stash running low hit harder than any zombie horde. This isn’t *Mad Max*; it’s *The Road* meets a FEMA after-action report. Farrell’s performance elevates it further. His delivery of Alex’s internal monologues—dry, darkly funny, always pragmatic—makes you forget you’re listening to a performance. When he voices the series’ villains (and there are *real* villains here, not just looters), his tone shifts subtly: a smarmy bureaucrat’s smugness, a warlord’s false camaraderie. It’s chilling. That said, this isn’t a perfect listen. The middle books (*Event Horizon* and *Point of Crisis*) sag slightly under the weight of tactical details—Konkoly’s military expertise is impressive, but there are moments where the play-by-play of supply runs feels like a *Call of Duty* loadout screen. And while Farrell’s consistency is admirable, his female characters occasionally blur together, lacking the distinct cadence he gives the men. But these are quibbles. The finale, *Dispatches*, is a gut-punch of moral ambiguity, and the series’ refusal to tie everything in a neat bow is what lingers.
