I’ve listened to a lot of ancient history audiobooks, and Griffin’s performance here is in a league of its own. His voice has this weathered gravitas—like a veteran recounting wars over a campfire—that sells Arrian’s no-nonsense prose. When Alexander’s troops mutiny at the Hyphasis River, you *hear* the exhaustion in Griffin’s delivery. The production is clean, but the real star is the text’s unvarnished honesty. Arrian doesn’t shy from Alexander’s darker moments: the drunken murder of Cleitus, the paranoid purges, the way his men start whispering ‘tyrant’ behind his back. It’s refreshing in a genre often clogged with hero worship. That said, this isn’t a casual listen. Arrian assumes you know your Macedonian geography, and the audiobook’s lack of a companion PDF for maps is a missed opportunity—you’ll want to google ‘Battle of Gaugamela’ mid-chapter. The pacing also stumbles in the later sections, where Arrian’s admiration for Alexander occasionally softens his critique (the treatment of the Pages’ Conspiracy feels rushed). But these are quibbles. For anyone fascinated by military leadership—or how charisma curdles into megalomania—this is the definitive audiobook. Just don’t expect a bedtime story: this is history with its edges intact.
