Narrating his own story, Shulem Deen’s performance is less a polished reading and more a confession overheard in a dimly lit room. His voice carries the rasp of exhaustion, the weight of years spent doubting out loud, and the occasional tremor of someone still raw from the fallout. The pacing is deliberate, almost glacial at times, which mirrors the slow suffocation of his former life—but it also risks losing listeners in stretches where the emotional toll isn’t immediately gripping. The real triumph is Deen’s refusal to romanticize his past or himself; he’s a difficult protagonist, sometimes reckless, often selfish, but always compelling. My biggest critique? The audiobook could benefit from tighter editing in the early chapters, where the dense Hasidic terminology occasionally bogs down the momentum. Still, the production’s raw edge suits the material, and Deen’s narration makes the story feel less like a distant memoir and more like a whispered secret shared between strangers on a train.
