About This Audiobook

*An Angel for the Earl* isn’t just another Regency romance—it’s a wickedly clever blend of supernatural whimsy and sharp-witted banter, where the afterlife gets tangled in the ton. Barbara Metzger’s heroine isn’t a simpering miss but a *dead* one: Lucinda, a spirited ghost whose celestial probation hinges on reforming the notoriously dissolute Lord Stanford. The premise could veer into farce, but Metzger grounds it in razor-edged dialogue and a surprisingly tender exploration of redemption. This isn’t a story about changing a man—it’s about whether he *wants* to be changed, and what happens when a woman (even a spectral one) refuses to be ignored.

Pippa Rathborne’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon. Her Lucinda sparkles with mischief, her voice dripping with dry humor one moment and aching vulnerability the next, while her Lord Stanford is all velvet menace—think a drawl that could melt corset stays or freeze a ballroom. The production leans into the supernatural elements with subtle, eerie echoes during ghostly interludes, but never at the expense of the romance’s emotional core. At under seven hours, it’s a tight, satisfying listen for fans who crave their historical romance with a side of metaphysical mischief.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I side-eyed the premise at first—a ghostly matchmaker and a rakehell earl? But *An Angel for the Earl* won me over with its sheer *verve*. Metzger’s writing is deliciously economical; no purple prose here, just crackling repartee and a plot that clips along like a phaeton at full gallop. The real delight is Lucinda, whose spectral state doesn’t dampen her wit or her agency. She’s no passive observer of Stanford’s reform; she *prods*, she *teases*, and—refreshingly—she calls him out on his nonsense. Their dynamic feels like a cross between *The Ghost and Mrs. Muir* and a Heyer novel, if Heyer had let her heroines swear under their breath. Rathborne’s performance is a masterclass in tonal balance. Her Stanford is all lazy charm with a razor’s edge, but she never lets him become a caricature—you hear the exhaustion beneath the bravado, the man who’s tired of his own reputation. The ghostly effects (a faint echo, a breathy overlay) are used sparingly, thank goodness; too many audiobooks drown supernatural elements in overproduction, but here they’re just enough to remind you Lucinda isn’t *quite* of this world. My only gripe? The ending wraps up a touch neatly, as if Metzger got nervous about leaning too hard into the bittersweet. And while the secondary characters are vivid, a few more scenes with Stanford’s cronies could’ve deepened the stakes. Still, for a romance that’s equal parts funny, steamy, and oddly poignant? This is a helluva good time.
