Nick Podehl’s performance in *An Education in Magical Affairs* is a masterclass in audiobook narration for genre fiction. He nails Orrin’s voice—equal parts exhausted everyman and reluctant strategist—without ever drifting into whiny territory. The side characters shine, too, especially Daniel (pre-accident) and the snarky, world-weary mages who treat Orrin like a walking inconvenience. Podehl’s delivery of the RPG mechanics is especially strong, making the ‘system’ feel less like a video game and more like a cruel, unspoken law of the universe. That said, the audiobook isn’t perfect. The production has a few odd moments where background effects (like spell casting or ambient magic) feel slightly overdone, almost drowning out dialogue in a couple of early chapters.
