J.S. Arquin’s narration is the glue that holds this audiobook together, transforming Andy’s scrappy, wisecracking voice into something intimate and immersive. He nails the manic energy of Andy’s dry one-liners—delivered with the cadence of a guy who’s spent too many nights whispering to himself in a trailer park—while smoothly pivoting to the eerie, otherworldly tones required when the narrative veers into full apocalyptic surrealism. His performance of the mutated characters is particularly chilling; there’s a moment early on where a coyote hybrid speaks in a childlike rasp that made the hair on my arms stand up. The production quality is top-tier, too, with subtle sound design that places you right in the Sonoran heat or the claustrophobic belly of a collapsing RV without ever feeling gimmicky.
