Alison Wheeler’s Anne Shirley is a revelation—not just a voice, but a living, breathing girl who feels like she’s been waiting her whole life to leap out of these pages. Wheeler nails the contradictions: Anne’s dramatic flourishes aren’t campy or overplayed; they’re the natural language of a child who’s been told she’s too much, too loud, too *everything*. The way Wheeler modulates Anne’s tone when she’s hurt or defensive is downright chilling, like hearing your own inner monologue laid bare. The supporting cast is just as strong—Matthew’s gruff kindness, Marilla’s stern warmth, and Diana’s tragic loyalty all sound like they’ve walked straight out of an old Polaroid, full of texture and timeworn edges. That said, the production isn’t perfect. The occasional abrupt silence between chapters feels jarring, like someone hit pause mid-thought, and there’s a moment midway through where Wheeler’s voice cracks slightly—hardly noticeable, but enough to yank you out of the spell. The pacing also stalls in the middle act, where Anne’s trials with Mrs. Lynde and the schoolhouse could’ve used a bit more propulsive energy to match Anne’s own agitation.
