Christine Lakin’s narration is the standout here: she captures Annie’s clinical precision in speech patterns without making her robotic, and you can hear the cracks forming in her confidence during key emotional moments. The dual narration from Stewart and Crais adds depth, especially in scenes where Annie’s assumptions about their characters hilariously miss the mark. The pacing is brisk—some supporting arcs feel rushed, particularly a subplot about office politics that fizzles out—but the central romance unfolds with satisfying tension. I especially loved how the audiobook uses subtle audio cues, like shifts in ambient sound during Annie’s panic attacks, to immerse you in her perspective. That said, the final act leans a bit too hard on romantic comedy tropes—mistaken intentions, a grand gesture at an airport—that feel at odds with the story’s otherwise fresh voice. Still, the performances elevate the material, and there’s genuine charm in watching someone so intellectually sure of everything trip over the simplest human emotions.
