The supporting cast is where he really shines, though. His Zikri assassin sounds like she stepped out of a noir flick, all smoky menace, while the bumbling tech genius gets a nasally, excitable tone that makes even his clumsiest moments endearing. The book’s pacing is a major win, too—Krout doles out action in chunks that leave you breathless, and Gilliland’s energy matches it beat for beat. When Luke’s team is ambushed in a zero-gravity fight scene, you *feel* the adrenaline. That said, the story stumbles in a few places. The worldbuilding can feel dense at times, with terms like “quantum flux stabilizers” thrown around without enough context until long after they’re introduced. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it does force you to pause and backtrack more than I’d like. The romance subplot also feels tacked on, like it’s there to check a box rather than serve the characters.
