Christian Camargo doesn’t just read this book; he performs it like a one-man theater piece. His Julian English is a study in contradictions—equal parts charm and ruin, a man who knows he’s digging his own grave but digs anyway. The narration’s real triumph, though, is how Camargo handles O’Hara’s dialogue. Every clipped, biting exchange between Julian and his wife, Caroline, crackles with a tension that feels less like acting and more like eavesdropping on a marriage already half-destroyed. The Pennsylvania dialect? Nails it. The pacing? Impeccable, with Camargo letting the silences hang just long enough to make you squirm. That said, Camargo’s performance occasionally veers into caricature when O’Hara’s prose gets florid—Julian’s inner monologues about his ‘demons’ sometimes sound like a noir parody, all whiskey-lozenge gravitas. And while the production is lush, the jazz interludes between chapters feel more like a radio station’s filler than atmospheric glue. Still, these are minor quibbles for a reading that lingers like good gin: smooth at first, then witheringly potent.
