I’ll be honest: *Ark Royal* is the audiobook equivalent of a B-movie matinee—loud, proud, and unapologetically pulpy. The premise is ridiculous in the best way: a starship named after a WWII aircraft carrier, commanded by a spacefaring Winston Churchill, squaring off against alien invaders. Mann’s writing doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it delivers exactly what it promises: tactical space battles with a side of patriotic bluster. The dogfights are visceral, the tech jargon is mercifully light, and the whole thing moves at warp speed. Toby Alden’s performance is the make-or-break element here. His Churchill is less *Darkest Hour* gravitas and more *caricature with a cigar*, which won’t work for everyone but fits the book’s tone like a glove. The supporting cast gets less distinction—some officers blur together—but the energy never flags. My two critiques: the alien threat feels underdeveloped (they’re basically target practice), and the 90-minute runtime means the ending arrives just as the world starts to feel lived-in. Still, for fans of *Honor Harrington* or *The Lost Fleet* who want a quick hit of military sci-fi, this is a guilt-free blast. Just don’t expect it to linger in your mind afterward.
