Backrooms Logs: Dreadful Encounter

I’ve listened to my fair share of Backrooms-inspired horror, but Rexword’s *Dreadful Encounter* stands out because it refuses to romanticize the unknown. Marc isn’t a chosen one; he’s a kid who made a bad decision and now has to live with the consequences, real or otherwise. The horror isn’t just in the monsters—it’s in the claustrophobic corridors, the flickering lights, and the way the air tastes like copper by the end. Virtual Voice’s narration deserves its own spotlight. The voice isn’t ‘bad’ in a traditional sense; it’s *wrong*. That monotone drawl doesn’t just recite the text—it *enunciates* Marc’s terror, making every shouted line feel like it’s being screamed directly into your ear. The production team also deserves credit for the sound design; the way they layer in ambient noise (distant whispers, the creak of a ceiling tile) creates a 3D soundscape that’s impossible to tune out. That said, the story isn’t without flaws. The backstory for the Backrooms itself feels underdeveloped—we’re told it’s a maze of abandoned offices, but the lore is delivered in frustratingly vague bursts, leaving more questions than answers. And while the monotone narration works in theory, there are moments where it blurs the line between ‘immersive’ and ‘exhausting,’ particularly during Marc’s quieter internal monologues. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. By the time the credits roll (or whatever passes for credits in the Backrooms), you’ll be checking the locks on your doors—and you’ll know exactly where you left your keys.
