Barbarian Awakening

I went into *Barbarian Awakening* expecting a splashy action romp, and what I got was a genre-blending gut punch—equal parts *Vinland Saga* and *The Haunting of Hill House*, but with more swords and less subtlety. Charlie West’s narration is a masterclass in vocal chemistry; his Thorvyn sounds like Odin decided to take a smoke break in a bodybuilding gym, all gravel and gravitas. Rose Trailings steals scenes with her knack for sharp, sardonic delivery, especially as Thorvyn’s long-suffering guide through Earth’s supernatural underbelly. The sound design deserves its own round of applause—every creaking staircase and guttural growl feels like it’s happening in your headphones, not just your imagination. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle act. Thorvyn’s internal monologues about his cursed hair and questionable life choices grow repetitive, and the worldbuilding occasionally trips over its own feet. The horror elements, while effective, sometimes feel shoehorned between sword fights, leaving the emotional core a bit thin. Still, by the third act, the story claws its way back into your gut with a climax that’s as brutal as it is weirdly heartfelt. If you’re here for polished, predictable fantasy, look elsewhere. But if you want an audiobook that refuses to play by the rules—and narrators who commit to the chaos—this one’s a win.
