I went into this audiobook expecting a fluffy, predictable rom-com—and left utterly charmed by how cleverly Brady dismantled my expectations. Karissa Vacker and Brandon Francis make an unexpectedly perfect duo as Josie and Ryan, their chemistry crackling with the kind of banter that feels earned rather than forced. Vacker nails Josie’s uptight, rule-obsessed energy with a dry wit that makes her grumpiness endearing, while Francis drips with effortless charm as the chaotic, rule-breaking Ryan. The narration is snappy, with just the right mix of comedic timing and emotional authenticity, though the production occasionally stumbles over some of the bookish jargon—“trade paperback” sounded like a swear word in one pivotal scene. The pacing is tight, though the middle third lingers a bit on workplace logistics that drag compared to the fiery romance at its core. Still, Brady’s sharp observations about the modern book world—where indie charm battles corporate blandness—add a layer of satire that elevates this above your average rom-com. By the final chapter, I was invested in their happily-ever-after, even if I’m pretty sure my local bookstore’s air conditioning is secretly sabotaging the competition.
