Beacon of Hope

I’ll admit, I approached *Beacon of Hope* with skepticism—gaslamp fantasy isn’t exactly a rare breed, and I’ve waded through my share of clunky worldbuilding and cardboard villains. But Cass pulls off something rare here: a story that’s both cerebral and visceral, where the politics feel as sharp as the blade wielded by a shadowy assassin. Patrick Mealey’s narration is the star. His portrayal of the protagonist’s mounting paranoia is chilling, and his ability to distinguish between the dozens of secondary characters—each with their own agendas—without relying on gimmicks is nothing short of impressive. The audiobook’s production is top-tier; the hushed tones of a midnight conversation in a gaslit library are as palpable as the grit of a factory floor. That said, the story isn’t without its hiccups. The middle act drags slightly, as if Cass is so enamored with his own world that he forgets to keep the plot moving at the same clip. And while the twist reveals are satisfying, a few feel a tad too convenient, as if the universe itself conspires to hand answers to the protagonist. Still, these are minor niggles in an otherwise gripping listen. If you crave gaslamp fantasy with teeth—where the intrigue is as likely to come from a well-placed rumor as a well-aimed bullet—this is your next obsession.
