The early chapters drag just enough to mirror Alex’s stagnant life, but once the childhood memories start bleeding into his present, the pacing tightens into something compulsive. The real standout? How Little uses mundane details—a neighbor’s glance, a misplaced key—to build paranoia. It’s not the house that’s terrifying; it’s the way Alex’s obsession with it isolates him, and by extension, isolates *you* as the listener. Nicholas Selker’s narration is a masterclass in restraint. He doesn’t *perform* fear; he lets it seep in through micro-pauses and the occasional tremor in his voice. His Alex is a man teetering on the edge of sanity, and Selker’s delivery makes you lean in, waiting for the crack. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The middle act sags under repetitive introspection (how many times can Alex stare at the empty lot where the house *should* be?), and the ending—while thematically satisfying—feels rushed, like Little suddenly remembered he needed to wrap things up. Still, the atmosphere is so thick with dread that I found myself rewinding scenes just to parse whether I’d missed a clue.
