Through the lives of Lotus and Jade, two inseparable teenagers navigating their junior year at the prestigious Lotus High, Wang sheds light on the cutthroat nature of Beijing's elite schools. AudioBook Atlas

As I listened to Betrayal, I became increasingly invested in the lives of Lotus and Jade, two girls who, on the surface, appear to have it all. But beneath their privileged facades lies a cauldron of insecurities, jealousies, and secrets. Annie Wang's prose is razor-sharp, slicing through the façade of Lotus High's glossy perfection to reveal a world of cutthroat competition and social hierarchy. Samantha Pilch's narration is a perfect match for Wang's writing, imbuing the characters with a sense of vulnerability and relatability. My only critique is that the supporting characters, while necessary to the plot, sometimes feel one-dimensional. For example, May May, the enigmatic new student, feels more like a plot device than a fully fleshed-out person. However, this minor quibble doesn't detract from the overall impact of the audiobook, which is to leave listeners questioning the true costs of ambition and the importance of genuine friendships. At just over an hour and a half, Betrayal is a swift and thought-provoking listen that will have you hooked from start to finish.
