The audiobook’s strength is Ghatak’s narration, which resists the temptation to over-emote. His delivery is dry, almost clinical, which somehow makes the absurdities Naipaul highlights even more cutting. When he reads a passage about a Malaysian official insisting that “Islam is a complete way of life” while his country’s economy crumbles, Ghatak’s deadpan tone lets the irony breathe. That said, this isn’t an easy listen. Naipaul’s skepticism borders on cynicism, and his focus on the *failures* of Islamic revivalism can feel one-dimensional. I wished for more counterpoints—voices that pushed back against his conclusions, not just illustrated them. The pacing also drags in the Iran sections, where the political analysis sometimes drowns out the human stories. But the audiobook’s production is flawless: no distracting edits, no uneven volume, just Naipaul’s prose and Ghatak’s voice, creating a hypnotic, if unsettling, rhythm. If you’re looking for a sanitized take on faith and culture, walk away. But if you want a writer who treats ideology like a specimen under a microscope—flaws, contradictions, and all—this is as bracing as it gets.
