I’ll admit: I didn’t *like* Naipaul by the end of this. But I couldn’t stop listening. *An Area of Darkness* is one of those rare audiobooks where the narrator and the material align so perfectly that the experience feels less like a performance and more like eavesdropping on a brilliant, cantankerous mind. Simon Vance doesn’t *perform* Naipaul—he *channels* him. His delivery is spare, almost austere, which suits Naipaul’s unsentimental style. When the text veers into biting satire (like the scene where Naipaul navigates Delhi’s labyrinthine bureaucracy to retrieve his stolen typewriter), Vance’s timing is impeccable, letting the absurdity breathe without overplaying it. The book’s structure—part memoir, part cultural critique—can feel uneven at times. Naipaul’s digressions into history or personal anecdotes sometimes disrupt the flow, and there are moments where his disdain for India’s poverty tourism (or his own complicity in it) borders on self-flagellation. That said, the audiobook’s production is flawless: no distracting edits, no uneven volume levels, just Naipaul’s words given the space they deserve. The real standout is the final third, where Naipaul’s visits to his ancestral village in Uttar Pradesh force him to reckon with the gulf between myth and reality. It’s here that Vance’s narration shines brightest, softening just enough to let the raw, unresolved emotion seep through. If you’re looking for armchair travel with easy epiphanies, look elsewhere. But if you want a masterclass in how to write—and listen to—uncomfortable truths, this is it.
