As an audiobook editor, I was immediately drawn into the world of Beyond the Widow's Fence, with Virtual Voice's smooth narration drawing me deeper into Etta's story. Shields' writing is a true strength of the audiobook, with a keen eye for period detail and a deep understanding of the human heart. The pacing is well-balanced, moving seamlessly between scenes of quiet introspection and action-packed drama. My only quibble is with the occasional overuse of period-specific dialect, which can feel a bit artificial at times. That said, the audiobook's many strengths far outweigh this minor weakness, and I'd highly recommend it to fans of historical fiction and romance.
