Big Sky Country

I went into Big Sky Country expecting a nostalgic, somewhat formulaic romance—and that’s exactly what I got. But Shaina Summerville’s narration added layers I didn’t anticipate. She gives the heroine a brisk, almost brittle energy that slowly softens, mirroring her emotional arc, while the rancher’s voice feels lived-in and genuine, never veering into caricature. I appreciated how she handles the silences between lines—those small pauses that speak volumes in a genre built on simmering tension. The audiobook moves quickly over its 5-hour runtime, which helps gloss over some of the more predictable turns, like the inevitable misunderstanding that halts momentum in the final act. That said, the story’s gender dynamics feel a bit out of step at times. The heroine’s initial portrayal as a ‘heartbreaker’ comes across as unnecessarily harsh, and the narrative occasionally undermines her professionalism to make room for romantic submission. Still, the Montana setting is richly drawn, and Summerville’s voice work—especially with secondary characters like the wry ranch hand and the no-nonsense diner owner—brings welcome texture. It’s not groundbreaking, but if you’re in the mood for a cozy, if slightly dated, romantic escape with strong regional flavor, this one might just rope you in.
