Nigel Davenport's narration is a joy, his warm, slightly gruff voice perfectly capturing the spirit of Durrell's youthful exuberance. He brings each character to life with a subtle, engaging performance that never overshadows the story. The pacing is leisurely, mirroring Durrell's meandering encounters with wildlife, which can feel a bit slow at times, but it's a small price to pay for such vivid, humorous descriptions. I particularly loved the chapter about the intoxicated hedgehogs, which had me laughing out loud. However, some of the family dynamics can feel a bit one-dimensional, with characters sometimes serving more as plot devices than fully realized individuals. Overall, though, 'Birds, Beasts and Relatives' is a charming, unique listen that will appeal to anyone who loves animals, humor, and a touch of nostalgia.
